MODULE 2 REVIEW QUESTION.
Question 10
Juxtapose the statement:  “The cost of optical fibre is a trade-off between capacity and cost”
Having understood the various kinds of communication cables available with its major being co-axial, twisted pair and optical cable, it is very clear that the price of an optical fibre is way expensive in comparison with other two mentioned above.
A quick search for recent prices on http://www.alibaba.com (a renowned online wholesale store), cat 5 shielded twisted pair cable goes for as low as 0.36 dollars per meter has four pairs in it,  75 ohm low attenuation RG59 Co-axial cable between 0.1 and 0.36 dollars per meter depending on the quantity and quality  needed  and A low quality household optical fibre cable  cost between 3 dollars and 12.35 dollars  per meter if you will be willing to buy up to 5 kilometers, the industrial standard used by telecom industries are way expensive because of the strands in the cable and the strand quality in them. This prices were generated at the time of writing this article (18:09:2015 12:23pm) and we can clearly see the price difference.
Then why should a sane mind go for such an outrageously overpriced cable when alternatives are relatively cheaper.
A look at the advantages of Optical Fibre cable may want to change your mind
According to a YABA College of Technology student Manual on Internet (Yaba Lagos Nigeria), here are the advantages stated

1.  Immune to Noise (Both Radio frequency Interference and ElectroMagnetic Interference
2. Very Secure, Cable cannot be easily tapped into
3. No Corrosion (buy once and you may not have to buy again)
4. Longer distances than ordinary copper wire
5. Smaller and Lighter in weight than copper wires
6. Extremely Large capacity of Bandwidth can go through at a fast rate compared to other two alternatives.

Judging by all its advantages more importantly data speed and bandwidth capacity compared to others (Twisted Pair : 0-100MHZ, Co-Axial Cable: 0-600MHZ, Optical Fibre 0-1GHZ) and others clearly are prone to interference and communication breaks, we can clearly say the price in itself is relatively cheap compared to what we stand to gain from its application.
I believe that is why every sane mind who has effective data transfer in mind will not look at its supposed expensiveness when using, afterall ones it is purchased, you don’t have to buy a second time hence you end up saving more money when you use such cables.
